Hypoalbuminemia—One Complication of Renal Failure

What is hypoalbuminemia?
Hypoalbuminemia is a deficit of albumin in the blood.
What causes hypoalbuminemia?
There are many factors which can lead to low albumin:
◆Poor nutritional state: People haven't been eating enough protein, or may be losing protein, usually during a period of illness
◆Increased excretion (or loss) of albumin from the body from:
① Renal (kidney) dysfunction: The decline of renal function leads to the decreased intake of protein and metabolic disorder of various proteins.
② Liver diseases, such as hepatitis, or cancer in liver, which may have spread from elsewhere in your body that causes to lose albumin, thus resulting in hypoalbuminemia.
③ Certain heart conditions such as congestive heart failure, or pericarditis may cause you to have low albumin levels in your blood
④ Problems with stomach including inflammatory bowel disease, or lymphoma, can cause hypoalbuminemia
⑤ Other forms of cancer or conditions such as sarcoma or amyloidosis can cause hypoalbuminemia.
◆Side effects from medications can cause hypoalbuminemia
◆Infections such as tuberculosis can cause hypoalbuminemia
What are the harms of hypoalbuminemia?
◆People may not have any symptoms, unless blood albumin levels are greatly lowered. In this case, people may have edema all over the body or edema in some parts.
◆There may appear muscle weakness, fatigue, or cramps
◆People may have a poor appetite, and may not be eating well. Even people who take in a lot of protein in their diet may still have low albumin levels in their blood.
◆If hypoalbuminemia is caused by liver diseases, people may suffer from ascites, with swollen abdomen.
