A sample of the kidney tissue (kidney biopsy) is sometimes required in cases
in which the cause of the kidney disease is unclear. Usually, a biopsy can be
collected with local anesthesia by introducing a needle through the skin into
the kidney.
The biopsy is usually taken from behind (except in the place of a
transplanted kidney) with a hollow needle being pushed through the anaesthetised
skin and muscles into the kidney tissue to obtain a small sample. The patient is
asked to hold their breath for a short time during the procedure to prevent the
kidney from moving with the respiratory diaphragm.
Kidney biopsy has been an important means of diagnosing kidney disease,
guiding treatment and judging prognosis, and plays an important role in judging
the pathogens of glomerular diseases and development trend. Kidney biopsy is
needed in the following situations:
1. Nephritis Syndrome: When the cause of Nephritis Syndrome is not clear, we
want to make sure whether the disease occurs secondary to systematic
diseases.
2. Renal function of glomerulonephritis patients declines fast, at the
moment, kidney biopsy is needed to confirm the pathologic type of kidney
damage.
3. Accelerated Nephritis Syndrome: When doing kidney biopsy, the state and
severity of inflammation and immune deposition can be found, which is important
to the early diagnosis and treatment. Primary accelerated nephritis syndrome has
no typical manifestations or accelerated nephritis syndrome can not be cured in
months or even with declined renal function, a kidney biopsy is needed.
4. Adult patients with primary Nephrotic Syndrome had better do a kidney
biopsy to make sure the type of tissue before using hormone lest there may
produce some side effects because of blind use of hormone. Especially when there
is no effect with hormone, patients should take a kidney biopsy.
5. Patients with hematuria can consider kidney biopsy when diagnosis can not
be made even exclusion of non-glomerular hematuria after various tests. Patients
with persistent hematuria but no clinical manifestations or patients with
hematuria and Proteinuria or patients with more than 1 gram of 24-hour
Proteinuria quantitative ness should take a kidney biopsy.
6. Merely Proteinuria lasts for a long time but without any symptoms with
patients. In this situation, kidney biopsy can be used to make sure the
pathologic types so that it will be helpful to choose medicines and judge
prognosis.
7. Patients with Lupus Nephritis, Renal Hypertension, Acute and Chronic Renal
Failure can take a kidney biopsy when the cause can not be diagnosed.
When one of the situations listed above happens, patients had better to go to
the hospital to do a kidney biopsy so as to make a specific diagnosis early.
