BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) Test is often done to check kidney function and BUN
forms when protein breaks down. The test can be done to measure the amount of
urea nitrogen in the blood. Next, the article will give you a detailed
introduction of BUN.
BUN Test should be done in examining these diseases:
· Acute nephritic syndrome
· Atheroembolic kidney disease
· Diabetic nephropathy/sclerosis
· Goodpasture syndrome
· Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS)
· Interstitial nephritis
· Lupus nephritis
· Malignant hypertension (arteriolar nephrosclerosis)
· Medullary cystic kidney disease
· Membranoproliferative GN I
· Membranoproliferative GN II
· Prerenal azotemia
Some medicines may affect BUN level:
Before having this test, patients should make sure the doctor knows which
medications they are taking. Medicines like Aspirin (high doses), Gentamicin,
Methyldopa, Neomycin and so on can increase BUN measurements. However,
Chloramphenicol and Streptomycin may decrease BUN level.
Results of BUN Test
The normal result is 7 - 20 mg/dL, but may vary among different laboratories.
Abnormal result means the patient may have kidney disease, including
glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, acute tubular necrosis and renal failure.
Due to Congestive heart failure, Hypovolemia, Heart attack, Shock and Urinary
tract obstruction, the result is higher than normal level. Meanwhile, Liver
failure, Low protein diet, Malnutrition, Over-hydration may lead to the lower
result than normal level.
Finally, there is one point should be added. That is, for the people with
liver disease, BUN level may be low even if the kidneys are normal.
