shijiazhuang patient vioceChinese Herb Bath Therapy is a characteristic Chinese medicine external therapy, which has the function of preventing and treating diseases. Last time we have introduced what Chinese Herb Bath Therapy is, its therapeutic range and curative effects. While what is the mechanism of action of Chinese Herb Bath and how does Chinese Herb Bath treat diseases?
(1) TCM mechanism of Chinese Herb Bath is as follows:
1. The medicine can directly arrive at the lesions through main and collateral channels.
As an external treatment method, medicated bath mainly bases on the holism concept of Chinese Medicine. Zang and Fu are the core of human body and human body are connected by the main and collateral channels from internal organs to four limbs and bones, striae and pores. Medicated bath acts on the texture of skin, and medicine runs in the main and collateral channels through acupuncture points and then reaches the internal organs. It goes through the human body from the outside to the inside and takes effect of promoting blood and qi and regulating yin and yang, thus achieving the aim of treating disease.
2. Collect the quintessence of herbal medicine when taking medicated bath.
The herbal medicine used for medicated bath is mostly aromatic medicine, which has the effects of promoting blood circulation and removing obstruction in channels. These medicines have strong smell, and the medicine gas is easy to be released after decocting and hot-water soak. It enters the human body through the texture of the skin and plays multiple roles of ‘dredging the channels, invigorating blood circulation, removing the stasis and directly arriving at the lesions.’
3. Medicine and bath acts together to sweat and drive out pathogenic factors.
Sweating method is one of the common treatments for removing pathogenic factors in Chinese medicine, and is the first of the eight methods. Chinese medicine has three therapeutic principles for the common ‘edema’ in our hospital, that is ‘open the door, clean the room, remove the pathogens’. ‘Open the door’ refers to the sweating method which is one of the three treatments for edema.
Heating bath itself makes people sweat, and with the help of efficacy of drugs, the pores will be widely open, so the patient sweats more thoroughly. The pathogenic factors will be driven out along with the sweat. After removing the pathogens, the body will get right, thus achieving the goal of recuperating one’s health.
(2) The modern mechanism of action of Chinese Herb Bath:
Skin is the largest organ in human body. Except the protective function, it also has many other functions such as absorption, permeation, sensation, secretion, excretion and so on. Medicated bath therapy just makes full use of these physiological functions of skin to treat diseases. Therefore, the physiological characteristics of skin are the premise and foundation of the application of medicated bath.
1. Transdermal absorption principle of medicated bath:
◆Enter into cells through permeating corneous layer membrane;
◆Macromolecule and water-solubility substances are absorbed through trichopores and sweat pores;
◆Permeate into dermis through intercellular space of epidermal cells.
2. Hydration principle:
The warming effect of hydration can make the pores open, and promote permeation and diffusion of the medicine, which are helpful to the absorption of medicine. Meanwhile, the higher the moisture of skin and degree of corneum hydration are, the stronger the permeation and absorption abilities of skin and corneum are. We can conclude that Chinese Herb Bath is a combined therapy of Chinese medicine therapy and modern physiotherapy.
3. Reflection principle:
There are a large number of autonomic nerve ending and particular receptor spreading in the skin. Under the action of medicated bath, nerve ending enters into active state from rest state, and then through reflecting and conducting function of nervous system, medicine can promote the regulation of nerves, body fluid and immunity, improve physiologic activity and pathological changes, strengthen immunity and resistibility of human body, achieving the aim of preventing and treating diseases.
Though Chinese Herb Bath is convenient to use and can avoid toxic side effects caused by other medicating methods, it is not applicable to every patient. Patients with the following situation can not take Chinese Herb Bath:
1. Patients with high blood pressure;
2. Patients with a high fever and much sweat;
3. Patients with open wound on the skin;
4. Patients with serious heart disease;

5. Patients who are allergic to Chinese Herb Bath.
