Creatinine level in blood is an important index of renal function. Different people have different normal creatinine levels because creatinine is produced by muscle and different people have different muscle mass. It is also different for men and women.
For men, the normal creatinine level is 53-106 umol/L (0.6-1.2) mg/dL
For women, the normal creatinine level is 44.2-97.2 umol/L (0.5-1.1) mg/dL
In different countries, the normal level of creatinine also has a little different.
Besides, if a person is muscular, the creatinine level in blood could reach 132 umol/L. On the other hand, if a person is very thin, his or her creatinine could be just 26.5 umol/L. The level can be affected by pregnancy and a little lower than normal levels.
Why do people have high creatinine level?
Mainly, high creatinine level is caused because of kidney diseases such as acute nephritis, chronic nephritis, PKD, etc. Besides when creatinine level in blood begins to increase, the kidney has been damaged greatly. Usually 50% of kidney function has damaged. Only when GFR reduces to 1/3 of normal level, creatinine begins to increase, hence GFR is also a mirror for evaluating the condition of kidneys.
There are also other causes of high creatinine level in blood. The causes could be vegetarian, CHF (congestive heart-failure), hyperthyroidism, anemia, etc.
If a person has high creatinine level in blood, relative test is needed to find the cause and than receiving treatment timely (if necessary). For if it is caused by kidney diseases, it could be serious, especially for people who has long-term high blood pressure, Diabetes, etc.
